Why Medicine free essay sample

Typical lethargic teenagers spend hours clinging to their mouse and browsing through the mass of information on the internet. For me, homing in on the appropriate material possibly saved a life and inspired my future career in the medical field. It‘s Friday. My tools for a relaxing night are three disconnected phone jacks, a silent house, and a bowl of chocolate fudge ice cream. Severing all ties with the rest of humanity en-sures a safe haven for precious time between me and the latest Nicholas Sparks novel. These nights are my favorite but on this one, I forget to sever all connections to civilization. Like the absent-minded peer in my Calculus class, I forget to turn off my cell phone and soon hear it chirping. Though I desperately want to remain in the concave impression of my pillow, it continues to ring. Picking up the phone, I am greeted by hurried breaths and mumbled syllables. Afterwards, dizziness, quivering limbs, and an increased heart rate beset her. Her heart rate when she called: 150 beats per minute. Two hours later: 130 beats per minute. An eerie calm sweeps over me and I go to work. My old friend Web-MD.com tells me that when one is using amphetamines, extreme physical activity is stressful to our little blood-pumper. Fun at work in Google

Question: Googles organisational structure and workplace practices (such as their fun at work initiatives) not only allow for increasingly creative and innovative ideas to emerge, but are also undoubtedly positive for employee well-being. Critically discuss this statement by drawing on the literature related to fun at work, and either culture OR organisational structure (Not Both) . Provide practical examples by referring to the practices of Google. Answer: The essay explores the fun at work in Google. The company not only allow for increasingly creative and innovative ideas to emerge, but are also undoubtedly positive for employee well-being. There is a bureaucratic culture that is prevalent in the organisation, whereby the organisation is striving to achieve a culture which will add to the benefit of the people and the company in the long run. In this essay we will try to explore the organisational culture of Google from the fun at work aspect and keeping a link with the post bureaucratic culture that is the company has adopted. It is where the organisation is not the top priority of the organisation rather the employees are given more preference. Organizational culture The concept of culture ha s recently became significant in the field of study. Organizational culture is a term widely used but gives rise to uncertainty as there are different cultures that are prevalent in every organization. It can be said that the culture is something that the business practices to develop the way the organization handles its people. Culture also promotes the way the organization promote values as well as well as the beliefs (Ybema, Yanow and Sabelis, 2011). A culture can also be destroyed if the management feels that it has started to dysfunction. An organizational culture is therefore can be viewed as something which gives the company a sense of identity. The culture determines the way the company determines its values, languages, norms, meanings and the way the works are carried out in the organization (Schein, 2010). The culture of the organization also surrounds the things which is good for the company and the things which have proven to have worked in the past. The things which have proven to be worthwhile in the past are often accepted in the current working condition. The Bureaucracy and Post Bureaucracy culture It is a type of organization which gives emphasis on the speed, clarity, reliability, regularity, precision through the creation of a fixed division of the tasks and hierarchical supervision as well as detailed rules and regulations (Morgan, 1997: 17). The organizations which follow the bureaucracy system, functions in a machine like manner. They are more reliable and predictable as well as efficient and rational. The employees also have certain job responsibilities and they work under a firm hierarchy. The problem with bureaucracy is that most of the organizations are positioned in an unstable environment which is rapidly changing. These organizations need to adopt structures which will respond to the outside pressures. One of the main benefits of post bureaucracy is that the people are more satisfied with the way of working (Knights and Willmott, 2012: 567. The main way to make the people work in a company is by work intensification. Google in this case is a post bureaucratic organization which believes in the freedom of the employees and work liberty is given. It needs to be seen that whether the company is successful in doing so and maintain their standards. Google Google is a multinational company started in America by co founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Scott, 2008). Google is considered the fourth company to be admired in the United States. Google has always worked on the slogan dont be evil (Mirani, 2015). The company also has a motto that they organize the information of the world and make it useful and accessible throughout the world. The two founders of Google alternated their roles in the company. While Sergey Brin looked after the ethical part of the business, Larry Page focused on the social structure. The company has always received an acclamation for the organizational culture which is unusual (Berger, 2014). The organizational culture of Google is designed so as to encourage both creativity and loyalty. The company has grown to a large extent in the past few years. It has always kept innovation at the front and with this goal they have achieved to include web browser called Chrome, YouTube, Google maps. Google is a widely diver sified company and has several businesses apart from its online ventures. The company is run by its culture and not by the board of directors (Google.co.uk, 2015). Features The company strictly follows the 70-20-10 rule. The rule is that the employees of Google devotes 70% of their office hours time in doing the works and the projects which they are given. The people are also provided 20% free time of their work hours so that they are able to relax and think about new ideas related to their main projects. They can spend their free time by exercising, swim have free meals (Lederer and Hall, 2000). This is done so as to make the employees feel motivated and that they have the time to think about innovative ideas. The services like Gmail, Orkut, and Google News have all been an outcome of these independent endeavors (Stecher, 2010). The rest 10% of the time the employees are allowed to think what the employees want to pursue regardless of the ideas nature. The company values this strategy as it has led to many new innovations and also the driving force behind these new innovations. The company also encourages open communication between the employees and th e executives. This open communication between the employees and the executives and give the employees a feel that they are contributing to the business objectives of the company (eHow UK, 2015). Culture Google thinks that the company is what it is due to the people who work in the company. They hire people who are determined and smart. The company believes in ability of the people and not the experience of the people. The company strongly believes that the employees of the company share a common goal and vision. The company hails from all the walks of life and they try to speak in almost dozens of languages (Google.com, 2015). This is keeping in mind the global audience that the company serves. When the employees of the company are not working on any projects they indulge in a number of activities like beekeeping, cycling, and Frisbee etc. The company strives to maintain an open culture inside the organization. This means that the company makes the employees feel comfortable about sharing their opinions and ideas. The company holds weekly meetings in the caf or over the internet via email. In these meetings the employees can directly ask questions to Sergey and Larry and the other executives about any issues regarding the company (Kaye and Jordan-Evans, 2003). The cafes of Google are so designed so as to encourage interactions and communications between the employees and within the teams. This sparks conversation as well as communication about work as well as play. Fun at work Google constantly tries to create the most happiest and productive work cultures in the world. But many people doubt that the unorthodox workplace of the company and the huge perks the company provides often hampers the creativity of the employees. The company provides the employees tremendous luxuries (Meyer, 2010). There are play areas, coffee bars, open kitchens, cafes, outdoor terraces, free lunch, dinner as well as dinner. The company has a library which has private reading areas. Moreover the employees of the company; the engineers are allowed to design their desks as well as the workstations. The building is chaotic and the workers express themselves by scribbling on the walls. This is a much common practice that the company allows to the employees. The post bureaucracy culture of the organization has in turn made incorporated these practices. The company sees to it that the employees get all the benefits needed to make the employees think in an innovative way. The success of Google depends on innovativeness and collaboration. The employees think that being on the same floor in the workplace make the employee bridge psychological gap since people interact all the time. Moreover the employees in Google do not show that they are working as they tend to be in a relaxed mood even on the weekdays. The science and art of stress management is what the employees in Google are provided (The New York Times, 2013). Like the employees are given follow ups with personal health advisors. The office has even workout equipments on which the employees can train and workout. The employees of Google work very hard to met their mission that is to assemble the information of the world and make it accessible to the users. The thing that truly makes the company unique is their workplace culture. The workplace culture at Google encourages innovation and do not regard anything as impossible, thus making the company a great place to work (Vise and Malseed, 2005). Thus it can be seen that though Google is a post bureaucratic organization it has maintained its standard and in their work and carried out its mission. But the company is not strict with its hierarchal structure and all the employees work together and try to enjoy their task. The work is not mechanized and the employees are satisfied with their job. Review an article “The XY Files” an Example by

Review an article â€Å"The XY Files† Usually, before having a baby, a married woman who considers herself in a secure relationship, weighs heavily the pros and cons involved in this critical decision. However, a mature single woman weighs the same pros and cons-finances and freedom-and a few more. The author, Lori Gottleib, of the article "The XY Files" is a mature, thinking woman who wanted to conceive. Having the resources for many options, she pondered the parenting process as a modern woman. The only option she did not have was a husband. As she chose how to conceive, she pondered the following: love, choices, and honesty. Need essay sample on "Review an article The XY Files" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed She knew she had not found love. Now her biological clock ticked more loudly every day, and the arguments with her current boyfriend seemed a bit louder, too. Although one friend suggested she simply marry the boyfriend and divorce him later, Gottlieb rejected that idea. When she married, she wanted to have a "core connection" (1) Therefore, just using a man to gain her goal of having a baby wasn't for her. Once Gottlieb decided to have a baby sans husband and sans boyfriend, she wanted the father to be someone not just anyone. She decided to find a sperm donor. Happily This woman who described herself "desperate but picky" in the dating world now seemed to be empowered with the ability to choose (1). She looked at several profiles of several different men. She waited until the sperm bank had an abundant supply of sperm from one particular donor, not only so she could choose this child's father, but also so she could reserve an ample amount of sperm for future children; thus guaranteeing that all her offspring would be related. Finally, in the end, Gottlieb felt as if her decision had been the right decision because she had been honest. As she wrote the article, she was pregnant. She did not deceive a man and "accidentally" get pregnant. She honestly paid for another man's sperm. Now when she dates she finds that men react to her decision with respect. They realize that this woman is totally self-sufficient and does not want to use them. These men realize that when she dates them, she is still looking for three things: love, choices (now in a husband), and honesty. A process that seems natural in a marital relationship-having a baby-becomes more complicated for a woman left to her own devices. The traditional "it takes two" arguments are waning in the media. The author, Lori Gottleib, of the article "The XY Files" chose to use a sperm bank and successfully became impregnated without the assistance of a boyfriend or a husband. She openly discusses the pros and cons concerning her decision. A woman considering this same choice should consider both the financial aspect and nature v. nurture involved in this matter. Financially, a woman would need to have a good reserve of expendable money in order to make the same decision. The initial visit with the doctor costs $400. Since the chances of becoming pregnant with frozen sperm are smaller (only 10%) with frozen sperm compared to "fresh" sperm. A woman must realize that she may need to try numerous times before becoming pregnant. Each month a woman spends about $1,750. to $20,000 for the insemination and the sperm. Although this method is free of the attachments and relationships-a freedom for some women-the monetary charge is an expense. The woman who chooses to use a sperm donor has the option to choose her father's baby characteristic by characteristic. When you fall in love with someone, you do not have this option. Never will you find the guy who scores over 90% in every area. Nose-91% perfect; teeth-94% in whiteness; SAT score 100% acceptable, and on and so-forth. However, when choosing a sperm donor as opposed to a mate, a woman doesn't have to like him personally, just his characteristics. The woman can "engineer" her baby by deciding which characteristics really matter, finding the profile that matches, and buying the sperm from that particular donor. However, something is missing here. If you believe in nature over nurture, the woman may be trading the 91% perfect nose for a personality type she really doesn't like in her son or daughter. How can a woman choose a personality from a profile? People lie on those things, you know. Personally, I think I'll stick to the old-fashioned way of making a baby. Even if my husband "Ed" isn't perfect characteristic-by-characteristic, it would be nice to cuddle with Ed and know that if my son is like him, and in turn, I will like my son. Abortion Essays (1761 words) - Human Pregnancy, Abortion, Fertility

Abortion Essays (1761 words) - Human Pregnancy, Abortion, Fertility Abortion arah Park Assignment #2 Rewrite December 9th 1998 During the past century, abortion has joined race and war as one of the most debatable subjects of controversy in the United States. The issue of abortion causes discussions about human interactions where ethics, emotions and law come together. There are many reasons why women decide to have abortions. Some women have abortions because of health complications, some have marital problems, and some lack responsibility. Whatever the reasons a woman decides to have an abortion, it seems only justified that she should be able to make decisions in regards to her life and body. The decisions that she makes in regards to what she does with her body and the fetus will be beneficial to both the woman and the fetus because it will prevent many problems from occurring in the future. If a woman were to have an unwanted baby, she may neglect or even abuse the child causing the child to go into the care of the government. Bringing an unwanted child into the world is unfair to the innocent child and the woman. The government has no valid reason in bringing an unwanted life into the world. Bringing an unwanted child into the world is not helpful to the parents, the child and the government, because if the parents cannot take care of the child, eventually, the government will be responsible for the child. The right to have an abortion is personal and essential to a womans life, because having a baby in ones life causes dramatic changes. Pregnancy and childbirth can prevent women from keeping and getting jobs. When women are pregnant many employers do not want to hire them because when the woman has a baby, the company or employer must still pay her for the time that she is out of work by law. Also, raising a baby and providing for all the needs that a child has is a lot of money, which can create an insufficient income for many women. Another factor that imposes on women when they have children is the amount of time they have for themselves and others beyond the baby. Women feel that it prevents them from providing services for others and time for themselves. Sometimes after a pregnancy and childbirth, many women have to give up their dreams on starting in school or end up dropping out because they do not have the time for it. They have to give up on something that will significantly influence her family and her future. Pregnancy has a great impact on the womans future and her future relationship with her family. In many cases of unwanted pregnancies, the women are not married. These women inmost cases cannot go home and announce that they are pregnant and be proud of it. Their pregnancy would be am embarrassment and disgrace to the family. Some families would suggest to the pregnant woman about disowning her, throwing her out of the house, and cutting off family communications and wealth. Many of these women cannot deal with loosing their family and the new lifestyle that they have to face. So in order to prevent losing their family and leading a tough life, they look into the option of abortion. Women should have the choice of deciding what would be best for their future, whether or not they are ready to change their lifestyle and decide the relationship between themselves and their family. A woman is equal to a man. But during a pregnancy, when the woman does not have the choice to abort the fetus growing inside of her, she is not his equal. A man can simply withdraw from a relationship as soon as he finds out about a pregnancy. He has the choice of staying and supporting the pregnant woman, or the choice of leaving her and the development of a new life. He can simply say a sentence or pick up his bags and leave while a whole new life is growing inside of her, a life that she cannot get rid of unless she has professional help. Without the choice of abortion, a woman does not have the same choices that a man would have. With the right to have

Some of them are professionals trained to groom hotels for interior designs and house keeping; cooking nutritious food with delicate garnishes; servicing variety of wines; offering professional skills and geographic knowledge for clients of tourism industry; manage public relations artfully; organize events and celebrations; and other services of similar nature. There working environments are often in excellent or satisfactory facilities. Like how seemingly lucrative the job sounds, they reinvent themselves to what suit best for occasions. The hospitality industry presents an opportunity for supervisory functions who can effectively and efficiently relate with people. There are perks and incentives offered by clients or manager clients in exchange for satisfactory services. There job also provides an opportunity to meet people from varied places and of varying experiences. The industries on the other hand present some threats and weaknesses especially whenever workers are exposed to sexual harassment or degrading experiences at work places. Harris and Reynolds (2004) who studied the motive in the hospitality industry pointed that there are customers who deliberately act or misbehave in abusive manner which cause some level of insecurity that will affect the hospitality providers. Women respondents professed that they are most discriminated in promotion and salaries while male hospitality workers responded that they are more exposed to uncertain possibilities. Woods et. al. (1994) bared that 25% of their respondents of women in hospitality positions experienced sexual harassment at work and that these are pervasive realities in this industry. Moreover, there is evident weakening of market conditions as some establishments within this industry decided to undergo cost-savings in both capital and operational level (Ernst & Young, 2009). Many decided to reduce expenditures, undergo asset management and limited capital improvements (Ernst & Young, 2009). Their situation is at some level unpredictable because they are also governed by developments that may negatively impact the industry, such as issues on insecurity, poli tical upheavals, economic downturns that may result to retrenchments. But such situation is generally true to all profession. What matters foremost is when executives and managers of hospitality industry are able to strategically manage its human resources
